Hackers Target Small Businesses.
News Release Date:  1/20/2010

The FBI and the American Banking Association have issued an alert to all small business owners who utilize online banking functions, advising that all online banking be done from a dedicated computer (a dedicated computer is a computer that is used for only one function).  If you access your bank account through online banking, you should only do so on a computer that is reserved for that purpose.  The internet on this computer should be used for banking purposes only.

The alert was issued after a rash of small business were infected with keystroke loggers, a type of malware that allows hackers to record and steal your banking logins and passwords.

To minimize your risk, take the following steps:

  • Perform online banking only from a computer that is dedicated to that purpose.
  • Do not check email, browse the web or pull up research websites on your banking computer.
  • Make sure you have up to date virus protection on your dedicated banking computer.
